In one of my graphic design courses I was asked to create an Illustration in the style of a professional designer. I chose to attempt to re-create the style of Drew Millward, who's work I really appreciated. I know it pales in comparison, but I hope to someday achieve the level of complexity and intricacy that Drew's illustrations provide.
I started off by looking through piles of his stuff online and tried to accumulate some themes, characters or any other inspiration. One big thing I wanted to focus on was the dripping nature of a lot of Drew's work. Things are often fluid and gooey and oozing and I wanted to capture that. He also had several pieces based around ice cream which I decided to incorporate into my design. After all my research and a few preliminary sketches, I came up with this draft.
I then brought this sketch into Illustrator and began to go to work. I spent many more hours than I had anticipated on this project and by this point I am glad to be done with it. Overall, I liked the way it turned out and it has gotten me excited to do more digital Illustrating. Already excited for the next one!
